A Group of Six British Citizens Jailed for One Million Pound Fire Attack on Warehouse Containing Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain working on behalf of the Wagner mercenary group linked to Russia have been handed jail terms for igniting a London-based warehouse that was holding humanitarian aid destined for Ukraine.

Sentencing and Roles

While delivering the sentences, the presiding judge at the central criminal court stated that they had planned a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” to benefit the Russian state.

The individual named Dylan Earl received a seventeen-year prison sentence with an additional six years on extended licence due to his “primary involvement”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was sentenced to twelve years in prison with an additional year on extended licence. Their admitted crimes resulted in them being the first individuals to be convicted under the National Security Act 2023.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also a Croydon resident, was jailed for a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, 23, from Thornton Heath, south London, was given nine years imprisonment and Ugnius Asmena, who was homeless, was given seven years in prison. The trio were each convicted of aggravated arson and given a additional year on extended licence by the judge.

Ashton Evans drug dealer hailing from Newport, Gwent, was jailed for nine years with an extra year on extended licence after being found guilty of withholding details regarding acts of terrorism connected to a separate scheme in the Mayfair area.

Details of the Attack

The deliberate fire on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and resulted in one million pounds worth of destruction in March last year.

The proceedings revealed that the 21-year-old Earl and the 24-year-old Reeves remained in their residences while organising the attack for the Wagner mercenary organization, representing the Russian Federation.

The group targeted the warehouse because it was being used to supply emergency relief and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was subjected to an arson attack 10 days later in Madrid, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command took over the investigation.

Evidence and Further Plans

When Earl was arrested, law enforcement examination of his mobile phone uncovered he had recordings of the warehouse fire being started and was in contact with the Wagner organization on the Telegram messaging app, via an user profile with the usernames ‘Privet Bot’ and ‘Lucky Strike alias’.

Some of the communications showed that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving fire-related incidents at a dining establishment and wine store in Mayfair owned by the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already taken place. The use of explosives to harm structures was also deliberated.

Investigators discovered that the defendant Earl was also considering the potential abduction of Chichvarkin and “exiling him back to Russia to face prison”.

The drug dealer from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had discussed an additional planned incident in the Czech nation.

In a search of his home, law enforcement located a flag of Russia, over twenty thousand pounds in currency and cocaine with a market value of about £34,000.

Driving Factors and Court Comments

The court heard he was a member of multiple pro-Russian propaganda channels and was driven by “simple and ugly greed”.

“This legal matter concerns the attempts by the Russian government to gain pernicious global influence using social media to enlist saboteurs far from the Russian capital.”

She determined the fire incident had a “terrorist connection” regardless of whether the individuals responsible knew it. The Wagner group is proscribed by the UK government as a terrorist group.
