Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
